Lights…Camera…Action! We’ve been long awaiting the time when we can all go back to enjoying our favorite award shows with in-person events. It isn’t quite the same watching these iconic stars accept their hard-earned awards from the middle of their living room. Also, we can’t forget about the behind-the-scenes photographs and the interaction between all the actors and actresses that we love to see. Now that we’re back to seeing these award shows in person I’ve gathered a list of my top five most iconic moments from the 2021 Emmy Awards.

5. Schitt’s Creek Reunion

The cast of Schitt’s Creek announcing the 2021 Emmy Award for Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

If you’re anything like my family (or the rest of the world) you’re obsessed with Schitt’s Creek. It’s honestly hard to not be in love with the show — it’s filled with humor, tough conversations, and family love. It’s the show that always manages to make us laugh and cry in the same 20 minutes. In 2020, they absolutely dominated the Emmy Awards with 15 nominations and 9 wins, rightfully so. They were brought back this year to announce this year’s award for Writing for a Comedy Series.

There were many cringy skits throughout the night, but leave it to the Rose’s to bring us one that actually made us chuckle. They were forced to “ad-lib” their speech because Eugene Levy decided it was a good idea to tell the writers of the show to beef up their speech announcement, leaving them with a blank teleprompter. It was a light-hearted skit that brought us back to how we felt watching Schitt’s Creek every season.

Was Schitt’s Creek skit your favorite? Or maybe Ken Jeong’s Covid-centric skit? Let me know in the comments!

4. Rita Wilson Rapping in the Opening Number

Opening Number for the 2021 Emmy Award ceremony.

Okay, this whole opening number was unexpected and entertaining, but Rita Wilson rapping really topped the cake. Cedric the Entertainer was this year’s host, and he honored his good friend Biz Markie, who passed away earlier this year, with his rendition of “Just a Friend.” Stars from all around the room joined in, including a fresh verse from the mom of the entertainment industry herself, Rita Wilson.

3. Jesus Christ on a Bike

Yes, those were the first words that came out of Emmy Award winner Hannah Waddingham’s mouth after she won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Well, only after the five seconds of screaming she shared with us as well. It’s always refreshing to see relatable speeches from these actresses and actors. I would assume that is exactly how I would accept my first Emmy Award as well, lots of screaming.

This was an extremely well-earned award for the Ted Lasso actress who portrays the owner of the beloved AFC Richmond team. Her range is extraordinary, and she consistently delivers in Ted Lasso every week.

2. Explicitives Filled Acceptance Speech

I’m sorry, but yes, I did include two Ted Lasso cast acceptance speeches in this list of memorable moments. Brett Goldstein, the tough, distant player turned coach, Roy Kent, of AFC Richmond won the award for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. In typical Roy Kent fashion, he filled his acceptance speech with expletives that he most certainly was not allowed to say on live television. It gave everyone a laugh and made us remember why he won this award in the first place.

Also, Brett Goldstein has an interesting story when it comes to being cast as Roy Kent in the Ted Lasso series. He was originally a writer for the program, but when they were writing the part of Roy Kent he had a feeling the part was perfect for him. He sent in an audition tape, and the rest was history.

1. Debbie Allen

Debbie Allen receiving her 2021 Govenors Award at the 2021 Emmy Awards.

An absolute icon in the entertainment industry, Debbie Allen, received the Governors Award. This award is received by individuals whose achievements and contributions to the entertainment industry, the arts, and creative avenues are so extensive that it does not fit into any singular Emmy Award Academy. After a lifetime of work and dedication to her own craft and teaching craft to others, Allen received this prestigious award. While this is an award of a lifetime, she still has lots of time and creative energy left to pursue her craft. She won two creative Emmy Awards earlier in the year for her work on “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square.” She is a force of nature and is continuously shaping the future of the industry.

There are countless other moments from this year’s Emmy Awards that I could talk about, but we’ll keep that conversation going over on Twitter. This year brought us back a sense of normalcy we’ve been missing from our lives the past few years with lots of laughs, well-deserved awards, and big upsets. I’m already counting down the days until next year’s Emmy Awards.

If you’re into Broadway, stay tuned for my article next week about the comeback of Broadway for the 2021 Tony Awards ceremony.
